Welcome to Weekend Institutes in Science Explorations at the University of Florida for high school science enthusiasts. A genuine passion for science is best cultivated through direct engagement.  GATOR-WISE offers a detailed exploration into the realms of genetics, medicine, environmental sciences, and more. 

Participants will conduct wet labs, analyze data, and develop an understanding of scientific principles. Lab experiences will be augmented by informative talks from distinguished University of Florida guest speakers at the forefront of their fields! This unique opportunity not only allows for active learning but also facilitates interaction with professionals actively shaping the trajectory of scientific advancements. 

Program Cost: $60 per program. 

Selections: Students are selected and notified 2 weeks before the program date. Waitlisted students could be accepted the week of the program.

BITTEN! The Biotechnology of Tick-Borne Disease

Explore how biotechnology is used to identify ticks and detect the pathogens they may carry. Through hands-on DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis, students will analyze simulated tick samples and determine which tick-borne diseases are present in a geographic region.

Launch Laboratory - Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Explore how mechanical and aerospace engineers use physics, aerodynamics, and design to create vehicles for flight. Through hands-on engineering activities, students will build, test, and refine systems related to motion, flight, and space exploration.

Explore the science behind animal health, veterinary medicine, and the care of diverse species. Through hands-on activities, students will examine how veterinarians assess health, diagnose disease, and apply scientific knowledge to improve animal well-being.
