This year the UF Center for Precollegiate Education and Training (UF CPET), UF Health Academy for Science and Careers (UF Health ASC), and the UF Health Cancer Center (UFHCC) are partnering to present SSI Special Topic: The Biology of Cancer! The goal of the program is for teachers to gain new content knowledge in Cancer Biology and create new lessons/curricula to prepare Florida students to master state science standards. Program content is aligned with state standards to facilitate participating teachers to create an Action Proposal to incorporate topics or activities from SSI into their classroom in a lesson.
This program is supported by the UF Health Cancer Center, supported in part by state appropriations provided in Fla. Stat. § 381.915 and the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number P30CA247796.
Who is eligible: While the content is directed towards high school level Biology and Health Science courses, all interested K-12 teachers that can incorporate topics from the workshop in their classrooms are encouraged to apply! The program is non-residential, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm and is open to any K-12 teachers within ~50 miles of Gainesville. The program will include workshops, lectures, discussions, lab activities, and curriculum development.
Food/Meals: Teachers will be responsible for their own meals. UF's campus, and the surrounding Gainesville area offers many dining options.
Stipend: Participants will receive a $1000 stipend for their participation in the program. $900 will be allocated at the 5-day program completion and $100 after student outcomes report is received from the teacher within 10 months of the program completion date.
Required Forms: As part of the Application process, you will need to complete and upload two forms: a program waiver and a School Support Statement. The School Support Statement should be completed by yourself and your principal or an appropriate administrator.
